We are pleased to present the Fall 2011 issue of the Delaware Docket, the Newsletter of the Delaware Judiciary, which is published semi-annually to provide updates on activities and events in the Judicial community. All are welcome to suggest topics, contribute articles for future editions, and provide suggestions on the newsletter. Delaware Recognized for Racial Justice Improvement Project Efforts
The Delaware Courts, criminal justice agencies, and others were recognized for their leadership in efforts to implement racial and justice fairness initiatives during a conference sponsored by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and the American Bar Association (ABA).

Historic Opening of the New Kent County Courthouse
On June 14, 2011, the new Kent County Courthouse officially opened. Kent County Superior Court Resident Judge William L. Witham, Jr. coordinated and oversaw the Courthouse Opening Ceremony.

The Supreme Court’s “From Classroom to Courtroom” Program Provides Delaware Teachers with Valuable Tools to Bolster Civics Education
June 2011 saw another successful year for the Supreme Court’s “From Classroom to Courtroom” program. Eleven middle and high school teachers from across the State participated in the three-day externship program offered through the University of Delaware.

Family Court CASA Program Received the 2011 Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Organization

The AOC Summer Youth Program, brain child of AOC’s Manager of Support Services Robin Jenkins, continued to expand with 49 high school students enrolled this past summer.

Delaware Courts Selected as Pilot Site for Mental Health Court Project
The Delaware Courts were selected by the Council of State Governments Justice Center (Justice Center) through the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) as a pilot site for their Developing a Mental Health Court: An Interdisciplinary Curriculum project.

Following the completion of the civil phase of the COTS automated civil case management system, the Supreme Court adopted a modified governance structure for technology in 2010 through a revision to Supreme Court Administrative Directive 176.

Delaware Coalition for Health and Justice Recived Funding for Women In Support Of Health (WISH) Program
In September 2011, the U.S. Office of Women’s Health (“OWH”) selected the Delaware Coalition for Health and Justice (“DCHJ”) to receive $1.5 million over 5 years in funding to address the unmet health needs of the sex worker population in Delaware.

Directive Ensures Adjudication on the Merits in Consumer Debt Collection Claims
Delaware’s Court of Common Pleas is at the forefront of a growing number of courts that are revising court rules to effectively manage consumer debt collection claims. On March 16, 2011, the court issued Administrative Directive No. 2011-1 regulating the content and procedure governing consumer debt collection actions filed after July 1, 2011.
