Welcome to the Delaware Justice of the Peace Court

As the place where justice starts, it is the mission of the Justice of the Peace Court to serve the people of Delaware by efficient and accessible administration of justice for all, and to treat all persons with integrity, fairness, and respect. Legal Jurisdiction of the Justice of the Peace Court is explained in our Jurisdiction section.

exclamationWhen coming to the Justice of the Peace Court, PLEASE BE MINDFUL OF APPROPRIATE ATTIRE. Read what is deemed inappropriate for court appearances and entry into a Justice of the Peace court facility. Wearing inappropriate attire and being denied entry to the courthouse will not be an excuse as to tardiness or failure to appear for any court hearing.  It is in the best interest of all persons entering the court to always wear acceptable clothing as failure to appear or tardiness may result in the issuance of a capias.  For more information, please read Policy Directive 11-240.

News & Announcements

Delaware Courts to increase e-document fee to support universal e-filing initiative (12/08/2015)

Justice of the Peace Court 16 has moved. JP Court 16's new location is the Kent County Courthouse, 414 Federal Street, Room 173, Dover, DE 19901.

Effective September 1, 2015, there will be an increase in some of our civil filing fees. View a complete list of our Civil Court Fees.

Effective Saturday, June 6, 2015 and until further notice, Justice of the Peace Court 20 will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays. The hours for Court 20 will now be Monday through Friday from 08:00 am until 12 midnight. This change in hours is necessitated because of the retirements of several judges in New Castle County at the end of May causing a shortage of judicial officers in New Castle County in the immediate future. We anticipate the appointment of new judges soon which will be followed by required judicial training. We will re-evaluate the operating hours for Court 20 in early October when we anticipate our judicial staffing to return to normal. We will be making some staffing changes at Justice of the Peace Court 11 for this time period in order to better accommodate the needs of the public and police agencies at that location.
