Environment Poster Contest

Welcome to the Delaware Middle School Healthy Infant Sleep Environment (DMSHISE) Poster Contest Homepage. The Child Death, Near Death & Stillbirth Commission (CDNDSC), the Infant Safe Sleep Practice Community Action Team (TISSPCAT) and the Department of Education are excited to bring this contest to middle school students in Delaware.

Middle school students have been chosen as they do the majority of babysitting may have infant siblings at home and may be future parents.  This unique opportunity gives students an avenue to show their creative talents, while serving the general community with an important health message that can make a difference in saving infant lives.  Unsafe infant sleeping deaths continues to be the number one cause of death in Delaware for infants one month to one year of age. 

Who is eligible to enter?
This contest is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in all public, charter, private and Catholic schools.  Students must work with a Health Educator/teacher and art teacher.  Two winning designs depicting an infant safe sleep environment, form each Health class semester will be selected.

What will be done with the winning artwork?
The art designs, along with the schools name will be imprinted onto tote bags, which will have additional safe sleep materials inside, i.e. blanket sleepers, safe sleep educational materials etc. These will be distributed to high risk populations throughout Delaware delivering the infant safe sleep environment message.  Designs will also be placed on billboards throughout the state.  Press releases and photos will be released to the media. 

What is the dealine for submission?
The fall semester deadline for submission is November 21, 2014. The spring semester deadline is May 1, 2015.  The fall semester winning poster will be awarded in December, 2014 and the spring winning poster will be awarded in June 2015.

What will the winners receive?
Two winners will receive a Mini iPad®, Two runners up will receive a $50.00 Visa® gift card.  Teachers involved in the winning student’s design will receive a $50.00 gift card toward the purchase of school supplies.  All students who participate will receive a certificate of course work completion.
