The Honorable Michael H. Tipton, Commissioner
The Honorable Michael H. Tipton became a Commissioner of the Superior Court in Sussex County on July 16, 2026.
Commissioner Tipton received his B.S. in Marketing from Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, his J.D. from Widener University School of Law, and his LL.M. in Tax Law from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. He was admitted to the Delaware Bar in 2013.
Prior to his appointment, Commissioner Tipton served as a Deputy Attorney General with the Delaware Department of Justice, representing both the Department of Correction and the Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement in civil litigation, administrative hearings, and regulatory enforcement matters. He also served as a prosecutor in Sussex County, where he led the Felony Trial Unit, screening, charging, and prosecuting a wide range of serious criminal cases, including violent crimes, drug offenses, property crimes, and white-collar matters. Commissioner Tipton previously served as an Assistant Public Defender in Georgetown, Delaware, and earlier as a Deputy District Attorney in Weld County, Colorado. His prior federal service includes work as an Intelligence Analyst and Presidential Management Fellow with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Commissioner Tipton has also served as Chief Executive Officer of the Embracing Hearts Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting families of children with critical or chronic medical conditions.
Commissioner Tipton's present term ends July 15, 2030.
