Judicial Internships & Externships
The Judges of the Superior Court of the State of Delaware invite highly motivated and qualified law students to apply for judicial internship and externship positions in our Court.
The Superior Court is Delaware's statewide court of general jurisdiction, handling both civil and criminal cases. It is also an intermediate appellate court, hearing appeals from lower courts and more than 50 administrative agencies. The Delaware Superior Court is consistently ranked number one overall by the nation's top corporate counsel and senior litigators, and it is recognized as the country's premier court of general jurisdiction.
There are 21 judges serving on the Superior Court: 15 in New Castle County, 3 in Kent County, and 3 in Sussex County. The Leonard L. Williams Justice Center, a state-of-the-art multi-court facility, is located in Wilmington's Christina Gateway section. Kent County's courthouse is connected to a completely restored historical courthouse located on the pre-Revolutionary War Dover Green, the state's capital. And in Sussex County, the Superior Court sits in a fully renovated historic courthouse building on Georgetown's Circle, just 25 minutes from the Delaware beaches. Each chambers and courthouse is outfitted with the most up-to-date office and courtroom technology. More information about our Court locations can be found in the Hours & Locations section of the Courts website.
We welcome interested students to apply for internship and externship positions.
What does a Superior Court intern or extern do?
The Court's busy mixture of complex commercial, criminal, insurance, tort, appellate and other litigation affords an unparalleled judicial internship or externship opportunity. Our interns and externs review pleadings, complete research assignments, observe trials, motions hearings, and other proceedings, and draft bench memoranda and preliminary opinions.
What qualifications do Superior Court interns and externs need?
Applicants should possess excellent qualifications, including superior legal research and writing skills. Top 10 percent or journal membership is preferred, but not required. Sitting for the Delaware bar examination is not a requirement; however, a judicial internship or externship will enable a Delaware bar applicant to meet many of the admission requirements.
Judicial Internship & Externship Application
The Superior Court's judicial internship and externship program follows the traditional educational semester system and includes one summer opportunity.
Applications are reviewed and interviews scheduled on a rolling basis. These are unpaid positions. Interns or externs may receive school credit depending on their school's policies and academic requirements.
